How to check a contractor license in Wyoming

Wyoming has no statewide general contractor license. The Secretary of State sends general contractor questions to the city or county where the work happens, so check with that building department. Electrical work is the exception, because the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety licenses electricians and electrical contractors and lists them in its public portal.

How do I check a contractor license in Wyoming?

Start with the city or county where the house is, because Wyoming leaves general contractor rules to the local jurisdiction. For electrical work, search the State Fire Marshal's Public Portal and Look Up, which covers electricians and electrical contractors.

  1. Find out whether the house is inside city limits or in the unincorporated part of the county.
  2. Call that city's or county's building department and ask whether it licenses or registers contractors.
  3. If it does, ask how to look one up, and check the contractor's name against the name on your bid.
  4. Ask whether the job needs a building permit, and who will pull it.
  5. For electrical work, open the Public Portal and Look Up from the Wyoming State Fire Marshal site and search for the electrician or the electrical contractor.

The portal only loads in a full web browser, so open it there rather than in a link preview. We last checked this lookup on 2026-10-19. If it won't load, call the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety in Cheyenne at 307-777-7288.

Does Wyoming require a general contractor license?

No, not at the state level. The Wyoming Secretary of State's business FAQ tells people to contact the local jurisdiction where the construction will happen for information on general contractors.

That puts the answer in the hands of the town or county. Rules can differ from one place to the next, so the building department where the house sits is the office to ask.

What should you check where no statewide license exists?

Check the local license or registration if there is one, the building permit for the job, a current certificate of insurance and a written contract. Those papers stand in for the state record you'd look up elsewhere. Ask for each of them before the contractor starts, not after.

Who licenses electricians in Wyoming?

The Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety does. It issues apprentice, journeyman and master electrician licenses, electrical contractor licenses and low-voltage licenses, and it also handles wiring permits.

An electrical contractor must employ a Wyoming licensed master electrician full time as its master of record, and that master can serve only one company. Look up the company and its master electrician. Plumbing licensing didn't appear on the state pages we checked, so ask the local building department about plumbers.

What does a Wyoming license lookup not tell you?

Outside electrical work, there may be no state record to look up at all. That gives references, the local permit history and a written contract more weight than they'd carry in a state with a statewide license.

A job near a state line can involve a contractor based next door, so check that state's records too. The lookups for Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah and Idaho are on their own pages.

This article is general information, not legal advice. Rules change, so confirm details with your city or county building department, or for electrical work, the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical Safety.

Proferral is a free app real estate agents use to keep a go-to list of the providers they trust and to remember every referral they send. Its license checks cover Oregon and Washington only, so for Wyoming you still run the lookup above by hand. Here's how Proferral's license checks work.
