How to check a contractor license in Utah
In Utah, search the contractor's name or license number in the Division of Professional Licensing's free Licensee Lookup. Utah issues statewide general contractor licenses, including the B100 General Contractor and the R100 Residential and Small Commercial Contractor. DOPL also licenses electricians and plumbers, so one search covers all three trades.
How do I check a contractor license in Utah?
Use the Division of Professional Licensing's Licensee Lookup and Verification System. Search by the contractor's name, with a profession filter, or by license number, then confirm the license is active and its classification fits the job.
- Ask the contractor for the license number. The core number alone shows every license the person holds, and the core number plus a four-digit identifier finds one specific license.
- Open DOPL's contracting page and click Verify a License, which opens the lookup.
- To search by name, pick the contracting profession in the filter to cut down the results. You can match names that begin with what you type, or names that contain it anywhere.
- Confirm the license status. A license on probation shows as Active on Probation.
- Check the classification. B100, R100 and E100 are the general classifications, and P200, P201, E200 and E201 are plumbing and electrical contractors.
- Match the name on the license to the business you're dealing with.

Does Utah require a general contractor license?
Yes. DOPL issues three general contractor classifications: the B100 General Contractor, the R100 Residential/Small Commercial Contractor and the E100 General Engineering Contractor.
The R100 is the one named for residential and small commercial work. DOPL also requires contractors to carry general liability insurance, and since April 20, 2026 the minimums have been $1 million per occurrence and $2 million aggregate. Specialty trades hold their own classifications, such as the H100 HVAC contractor classification.
Who licenses electricians and plumbers in Utah?
DOPL does. It licenses apprentice, journeyman, residential journeyman, residential master and master electricians and plumbers, and they all appear in the same Licensee Lookup.
A plumbing contractor must have a Master Plumber qualifier, and an electrical contractor must have a Master Electrical qualifier. Residential plumbing and electrical contractors hold P201 and E201 classifications, while general ones hold P200 and E200. For a plumbing or electrical job, check both the company's contractor license and the tradesperson's own license.
What does a Utah license lookup not tell you?
The record shows license status, not the quality of the work. Insurance is a licensing requirement, but a policy can lapse between renewals, so ask for a current certificate of insurance on a big job. Ask for references from jobs like yours, too.
A license that fits the job is the minimum, not proof the contractor is right for it. If the contractor also works in another state, the state-by-state guide has the lookup for each one.
A job near a state line can involve a contractor based next door, so check that state's records too. The lookups for Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado, Arizona and Nevada are on their own pages.
