How to check a contractor license in Oklahoma

Oklahoma has no state license for general contractors. The Construction Industries Board licenses electrical, plumbing and mechanical contractors and registers roofers, and its free online searches show whether a license or roofing registration is active. For a general contractor, look up the licensed trades doing the work and ask your city what local permits apply.

How do I check a contractor license in Oklahoma?

Search the Construction Industries Board (CIB), which runs one search for licensed trades and a separate one for roofers. Both are linked from the CIB home page.

  1. Ask the contractor for the trade license number or the roofing registration number, along with the exact business name.
  2. For electrical, plumbing or mechanical work, open the CIB licensee search. We last checked this lookup on 2026-10-19. The search wouldn't connect when we tried it that day, so you may need to open it in a regular web browser.
  3. For a roofer, open the separate search for registered roofing contractors. It showed us only an empty page frame, so it may need a regular browser too.
  4. Search by the name or number you have. Confirm the license or registration is active and that the trade on the record matches the job.
  5. If neither search will open, call the CIB at (405) 521-6550 or toll-free at (877) 484-4424, Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The CIB lists building inspectors, electrical, home inspectors, mechanical, plumbing and roofing as the trades it covers. If the job involves anything outside that list, the CIB search won't help, and your city is the place to ask.

Does Oklahoma require a general contractor license?

No. The CIB says general contractors are not currently required to have a state license in Oklahoma for general contracting. Anyone doing or offering to do licensed or registered trade work still needs the trade license or registration.

So for a remodel run by a general contractor, look up the electrician, plumber, mechanical contractor and roofer who'll do the trade work. The CIB also tells people to contact local jurisdictions about local requirements, so call the city about registration and permits.

Do roofers need a license in Oklahoma?

Yes, they need a registration. Roofing contractors register with the CIB, and registered roofers show up in their own roofing search rather than the main trade search.

The CIB has also announced a new residential roofing endorsement required by House Bill 1628. Read the announcement on the CIB home page for what it covers and when it applies, and ask any roofer bidding on a house whether they hold it.

Who licenses electricians and plumbers in Oklahoma?

The Construction Industries Board does. It licenses electrical, plumbing and mechanical trades, along with home inspectors and building inspectors, and one licensee search covers all of them.

That makes the CIB licensee search the one place to check most of the trade work on an Oklahoma house. The roofer is the exception, since roofing has its own search.

What does an Oklahoma lookup not tell you?

A license record shows status, not the quality of anyone's work. It also doesn't show whether the contractor has insurance in place for your job, so ask for a current certificate of insurance and a couple of references from recent jobs. A general contractor won't appear in either search at all, because Oklahoma doesn't license general contracting.

A job near a state line can involve a contractor based next door, so check that state's records too. The lookups for Kansas, Missouri, Arkansas, Texas, New Mexico and Colorado are on their own pages.

Other states license contractors in very different ways, and the guide on how to check a contractor license, state by state covers each one. This article is general information, not legal advice. Rules change, so confirm details with the Construction Industries Board.

Agents can keep these contractors in Proferral

Proferral is a free app real estate agents use to keep a go-to list of the providers they trust and to remember every referral they send. Its license checks cover Oregon and Washington only, so for Oklahoma you still run the lookup above by hand. Here's how Proferral's license checks work.
