How to check a contractor license in Louisiana

Search the Louisiana State Licensing Board for Contractors (LSLBC) by name, license number, city, parish or contractor type, and only current licenses and registrations will show up. A home improvement job over $7,500 and up to $50,000 needs a registration, and residential construction over $50,000 needs a residential license. Plumbers also hold a State Plumbing Board license.

How do I check a contractor license in Louisiana?

Use the LSLBC contractor search, which finds licenses and home improvement registrations by name, number, city, parish, contractor type or qualifying party. If a contractor doesn't appear, the board isn't showing a current license or registration for them.

  1. Get the license or registration number from the contractor or from the contract.
  2. Open the LSLBC contractor search.
  3. Search by license number or contractor name. To find home improvement registrants, search by type of contractor.
  4. Confirm that the name on the record matches the name on the contract.
  5. Check that the license or registration fits the size of the job, using the dollar limits in the next section.

We last checked this lookup on 2026-10-19. The board says only currently licensed or registered contractors appear in the results, and that its data may not reflect recent changes. If a result surprises you, call the LSLBC at 225-765-2301.

Does Louisiana require a license for home improvement work?

Yes, once the job is big enough. A home improvement project over $7,500 and up to $50,000 needs a home improvement registration, and residential construction over $50,000 needs a residential license, with labor and materials counted together.

The board adds that a commercial license does not allow a contractor to build a single home. New home construction needs a residential license with the Residential Construction classification. Mold remediation has a license of its own once a project reaches $7,500.

Who licenses plumbers and electricians in Louisiana?

The State Plumbing Board of Louisiana licenses plumbers and natural gas fitters, and it keeps a public roster you can search. For electrical, mechanical or plumbing work on a commercial project over $10,000, the contractor also needs an LSLBC license.

You can search the plumbing board roster by license type, parish, plumber name, company name, license number or address. The plumbing board is moving under the LSLBC, because Act 908 of the 2026 session transfers plumbing licensing to it, fully in effect on January 1, 2027. After that date, check the LSLBC site to see where plumber records live. For an electrician on a home job, ask the parish or city permit office what license it expects.

What should you check when the job is under $7,500?

Below $7,500, the LSLBC search may show nothing at all, because no registration is required at that size. That doesn't make the contractor a poor choice, but it does mean you need other checks.

A job near a state line can involve a contractor based next door, so check that state's records too. The lookups for Texas, Arkansas and Mississippi are on their own pages.
