Realtor Christmas gifts for clients, by budget
Sources checked on
The Christmas gifts past clients remember are small and personal: a handwritten card, a box of flameless candles, a gift card to a shop near their house, or something they'll use over the holidays. Pick a budget for each client, mail by the USPS send-by dates, and know that the IRS caps the business gift deduction at $25 a person.
What are good Christmas gifts for past clients?
Good holiday gifts get used in December and don't need explaining. Your past clients are probably getting cards and cookie tins from their dentist, their insurance agent and their kids' school, so a gift with a handwritten line about their house stands out more than a pricier one with a printed label. Write the note first and pick the gift second.
One honest limit applies to everything below. A gift won't make anyone call you about a house; it reminds them you exist, and that's all it can do.
Under $10 a client
- A handwritten card is the cheapest gift, and it's the one with your own words in it. Mention something about their house, like the first Christmas in the place with the big front window.
- A small box of locally made cookies or candy, dropped off in person, gets you a two-minute visit at the door.
- A printed card with the link to your go-to list of pros is useful after the holidays, when the furnace is running every day.
These work for a long list of past clients. They don't look like much on their own, so the note has to carry them.
Around $25 a client
- A set of battery-operated flameless candles is a holiday gift with a safety reason behind it, which the table below explains.
- A gift card to a coffee shop or restaurant close to their house says you remember where they live. Buy it in person and look it over first.
- A carbon monoxide alarm sounds dull, but it's a fair gift for a client in an older house heading into the heating season.
More than $25 a client
Save bigger gifts for the clients who sent you business this year, and give them in person. A nice dinner out or a framed photo of their house can mean a lot. Know before you spend that the IRS deduction stops at $25 a person, as the section below explains.

When should you mail holiday gifts to clients in 2026?
For addresses in the lower 48 states, USPS recommends sending by these 2026 dates for delivery before Christmas:
- USPS Ground Advantage and First-Class Mail: Thursday, December 17
- Priority Mail: Friday, December 18
- Priority Mail Express: Saturday, December 19
USPS says actual delivery may vary with the origin, the destination and the Post Office acceptance time, so treat those as the last safe days, not the target. Mailing cards in the first week of December leaves room for a slow delivery and for clients who travel over the holidays. Clients in Alaska, Hawaii or overseas have their own dates on the USPS holiday page.
Can realtors deduct Christmas gifts to clients?
Yes, within a limit. IRS Publication 463 says: "You can deduct no more than $25 for business gifts you give directly or indirectly to each person during your tax year." The same section says a gift to a member of a customer's family is generally considered an indirect gift to the customer, and that a married couple who both give gifts are treated as one taxpayer.
Whether a given gift qualifies depends on details this page can't see. This article is general information, not tax or legal advice. Rules change, so confirm the details with a tax professional before you count on the deduction.
What if a vendor offers to pay for your client gifts?
Be careful, and ask before you say yes. A lender, title company or contractor may offer to pay for holiday gifts or co-brand them with you, and the rules on what an agent can accept from a vendor vary by state and by brokerage. Check with your broker or your state's licensing board before you accept, and before you put anyone else's name on a gift to your clients.
Tuck your go-to list into the holiday card
In Proferral, each client gets their own link to your go-to list, and it opens with no app and no login. Print it in the holiday card, or send it from your own phone with a holiday text, and it costs nothing on the Free plan; no credit card needed to sign up. Proferral never messages a client in your name without you sending it, so the card and the note are still yours to write. See your go-to list.
